Running "Everything"

How do I run "Everything" on system startup with Windows Defender?

When you try to run "Everything" on system start up Windows Defender displays "Windows has blocked some startup programs."

Windows Defender will block "Everything" because it requires administrative privileges.

To Run "Everything" on system start up with out showing this message:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Under the General tab, uncheck Start Everything on system startup.
  • Click OK.

  • Make sure you use -startup in the Add Arguments box

Checking for updates on startup

To receive update notifications on startup:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Check Check for updates on startup.
  • Click OK.

Disable run in background (also hide the taskbar notification icon)

To disable run in background:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Uncheck Run in background.
  • Click OK.

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.

  • Check desktop shortcut.
  • Click OK.

Enable the Quick launch shortcut

To enable the Quick launch shortcut:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Check Quick launch shortcut.
  • Click OK.

Disable multiple windows

By default, when you run "Everything" it will create a new search window. If you disable multiple windows only one search window can be created. With multiple windows disabled, running "Everything" multiple times will focus the existing window.

To disable multiple windows:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Uncheck Allow multiple windows.
  • Click OK.

Enable multiple instances

To enable multiple instances:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • check Allow multiple instances.
  • Click OK.

Not recommended, please use named instances instead. See -instance command line option.

Unload the database when inactive

To unload the database when inactive:

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • check Unload the database when inactive.
  • Click OK.

Set a hotkey to open "Everything"

To set a hotkey to open "Everything":

  • In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Set the hotkey modifier, this can be any combination of Control, Shift, Alt or the Windows key. (Can be none)
  • Set the hotkey key. (This must be set, use VK_BROWSER_SEARCH for the search button on your keyboard)
  • Click OK.
