Hide results when the search is empty
Add the following line to the end of the Everything.ini file in your "Everything" installation folder.
empty_search_matches_nothing=1
You will not be able to edit the file while the Everything process is running.
Jumping to a result in the list
To jump to a folder or file that starts with the jump to string:
- Click on the result list to bring it into focus.
- Type in the full or partial name.
The charactor pressed will be appended to the jump to text.
The jump to text is displayed in the status bar as you type.
If the jump to string matches the start of a result in the list, the item will be brought into view and selected.
If a charactor was not found Everything will beep, press backspace to remove the last charactor.
Sorting results
By default the results are sorted by Name, then Path.
Sorting is reset back to the default each time the search parameters change.
At the top of the result list is a header
To sort results in ascending order:
- Click on the header you wish to sort by.
To sort results in descending order:
- Make sure the column you wish to sort is already sorted in ascending order.
- Click on the header again.
Note: Sorting by path and descending name can take several seconds.
Note: Sorting can be slow when sorting large ammounts of results.
A confirmation dialog is shown when the user wants to sort more than 1000 results.
Sorting more than 1000 results could take several minutes to gather the file information.
Disable large sort confirmation
To disable large sort confirmation:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the General tab.
- Uncheck Confirm large sort.
- Click OK.
Set the large sort confirmation threshold

- See large_sort_threshold.
Smooth scrolling
Smooth scrolling is disabled by default because it is a CPU hog.
To enable smooth scrolling:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Select Update display immediately after scrolling.
- Click OK.
Auto scroll view
Automatically scroll the list view when the selection mask is dragged out of view.
To enable Auto scroll view:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Select Auto scroll view.
- Click OK.
ToolTips
To disable ToolTips:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Uncheck Show ToolTips.
- Click OK.
Highlight the row the mouse is over
To enable highlighting of the row the mouse is over:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Check Show row mouseover.
- Click OK.
Show highlighted search terms
To enable highlighted search term:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Check Show highlighted search terms.
- Click OK.
Show selected item in the statusbar
To show the selected item in the statusbar:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Check Show selected item in the statusbar.
- Click OK.

- Click OK.
Change the icon loading priority
To change the icon loading priority:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Select the Icon load priority.
- Click OK.
Change the maximum size of icons indexes to cache
To change the maximum size of icons indexes to cache
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Set Maximum icon cache size to the new size in KB. (0 = unlimited)
- Click OK.

To change the file information loading priority:
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Select the File information priority.
- Click OK.
Change the maximum size of file information to cache
To change the maximum size of file information to cache
- In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Set Maximum file info cache size to the new size in KB. (0 = unlimited)
- Click OK.
