About "Everything"

What is "Everything"?

"Everything" is a search engine for Windows.

"Everything" can quickly locate files and/or folders by name.

Basic file operations can be applied to the results.

"Everything" does not index file contents.

How is Everything different from other search engines

Using "Everything"

Running Everything for the first time

After Everything is installed it will begin indexing all your files.

Indexing can take a minute, the progress is displayed in the status bar.

You can start searching immediately, however your results will not appear until the database has finished being built.

By default all volumes are included in the database to select which volumes to include see Creating a database.

How to use "Everything"

"Everything" has 2 basic parts:

  • Search edit to set search parameters.
  • Result list to view search results.

To search for a folder or file:

  • Click on the search edit to bring it into focus.
  • Type in the full or partial name of the folders or files you wish to search for.

The results will be listed realtime.

To open an item:

  • Click on the item to select it and press enter.");

  • Double click on an item.

Jumping to a result in the list

To jump to a folder or file that starts with the jump to string:

  • Click on the result list to bring it into focus.
  • Type in the full or partial name.

The charactor pressed will be appended to the jump to text.

The jump to text is displayed in the status bar as you type.

If the jump to string matches the start of a result in the list, the item will be brought into view and selected.

If a charactor was not found Everything will beep, press backspace to remove the last charactor.

How do I search a computer on the network?

To search a computer on the network you will need to run Everything on both computers.

One computer will need to Start an ETP server.

The other computer will need to connect to that ETP server.


To start an ETP server:

  1. In "Everything", On the Tools menu, click Start ETP server.


To connect to an ETP server:

  1. In "Everything", On the Tools menu, click Connect to ETP Server....
  2. Type in the ETP server name.
  3. Click OK.


How do I get the name of the ETP server?

To get the name of the ETP server:

  1. On the computer starting the ETP server, In "Everything", on the Tools menu, click Connect to ETP Server...
  2. The name of the ETP server is listed under User.
  3. Click Cancel.


How do I disable update notifications?

To disable update notifications:

  1. In "Everything", on the Tools menu, click Options
  2. Under the General tab, uncheck Check for updates on startup.
  3. Click OK.


How do I remove the start menu shortcuts?

To remove the start menu shortcuts:

  1. In "Everything", on the Tools menu, click Options
  2. Under the General tab, uncheck Start Menu shortcuts.
  3. Click OK.
